Tjuringa are sacred objects possessed by an individual or group, they have legends, chants and ceremonies associated with them, and upon each tjuringa there is often a totem of the group to which it belongs. Tjuringa are thought to have magical properties, they would be rubbed on the body to confer sacredness onto the subject, and to do such things as heal wounds. While useful to the individual, the clan’s collective fate was also tied up within the tjuringas. | |||||||||||
